چکیده

Diversity is an asset, as long as it allows cooperation. In the case of information systems and databases, the data model used is a help or a hindrance for this cooperation of diverse views; this is characterized by the semantic relativism of the model. We first analyze diversity within an information system, where cooperation is made possible by the use of external schemata; semantic relativism of the model of the database schema is the key factor. Then we discuss diversity between different information systems, where they cooperate thru interoperability, by schema integration into federated schemata; semantic relativism of the canonical data model is shown to be determinant.

Evaluation of “Mosaic 1 Reading”: A Microstructural Approach to Textual Analysis of Pedagogical Materials

To analyze and evaluate textbooks, researchers have either proposed scales and checklists to be filled by teachers and learners or conducted qualitative investigations of the match between SLA theories and textbook activities. This study, however, employs the microstructural approach of schema theory to scrutinize the reading passages of “Mosaic 1 Reading”. To this end, 17 passages of the textb...

Meaningfulness of Religious Language in the Light of Conceptual Metaphorical Use of Image Schema: A Cognitive Semantic Approach

According to modern religious studies, religions are rooted in certain metaphorical representations, so they are metaphorical in nature. This article aims to show, first, how conceptual metaphors employ image schemas to make our language meaningful, and then to assert that image-schematic structure of religious expressions, by which religious metaphors conceptualize abstract meanings, is the ba...

Stepwise Re-Engineering and Development of Object-Oriented Database Schemata

We present a general approach for re-engineering of object-oriented database schemata. The approach consists of four dependent steps: (1) description of the data within the underlying basic data format, (2) application of a powerful semantic data model in order to construct a semantic database schema, (3) translation of the achieved schema into a general object model, and (4) implementation of ...

Update Support for Database Views Via Cooperation

Support for updates to views of database schemata is typically very limited; only those changes which can be represented entirely within the view, or changes which involve only generic changes outside of the view, are permitted. In this work, a different point of view towards the viewupdate problem is taken. If a proposed update cannot be performed within the view, then rather than rejecting it...

Enhancing the Semantics of Federated Schemata by Translating Sql-queries into Object Methods

Within the context of federated databases, considerable attention has been paid to the translation of relational export schemata of participating databases to a semantically richer common data model, such as the object-oriented model. Such a translation results in the deenition of an object-oriented component schema for the local database. Each class deenition in the component schema is a mappi...
